Who’s Afraid of a Little Video Camera?
Turns out, lots of folks, just like with public speaking! In fact, most businesses don’t delve into video marketing simply because they’re afraid they won’t look good on camera, or that they won’t appear professional. That’s understandable, but being camera shy is no reason to miss out on the Online Video Revolution! There are even ways to create effective promotional videos without appearing on camera.
If you’re not sure where to begin with video marketing, my friend and colleague Lou Bortone has created a really helpful Video Resource Center at http://www.OnlineVideopolis.com.
Lou’s a guy who’s been around video for his entire career. He’s not one of these Johnny-or-Jenny-come-latelies who decided to jump on a hot trend. Lou was in TV broadcasting for years and finally decided to get out that rat race for a simpler way of life where he could spend more time being a great Dad & hubby to his lovely wife. So now Lou both creates video for and teaches video to entrepreneurs like us.

If you decide you’d like to give public speaking on video a try, Lou is definitely the guy to get you started – yes even if you’re pretty much a technophobe like me. And I’ll toss in a few tips myself for making sure you are effectively communicating your message on video:
- Make Eye Contact: Wait… what? Aren’t we talking about video here? Yep. Here’s how you make direct eye contact when you’re speaking on video: look directly at the lens. You’ve seen people looking slightly off camera or looking down reading their notes, right? It’s unnerving for most viewers because when you appear on video, people feel like you are talking directly to them — because you ARE! We’re taught it’s rude not to make eye contact with someone you’re talking to, so make that video eye contact and your viewers will be happy.
- Be Concise: In most promotional message you don’t have a lot of time. The media have trained us to look for information and get it quickly. Looking for an in-depth news story? That’s likely 2-3 minutes on your nightly local news broadcast. Ads on TV are 30-60 seconds long, typically. Some online video ads produced by major national brands are even shorter at 15-20 seconds. You have to compete with all that, so make sure your message is tight. To get more info across, consider doing a series of shorter videos, rather than one long one.
- Look the Part: Just because you work at home in your sweats does not mean you should appear on video that way. If you run any type of professional business, you’ll need to look like a professional in your industry. That’s not to say you need to appear in a suit in all your videos, but your appearance should match your message.

Last weekend was our town’s annual Christmas Walk, where they shut down Main Street, have all sorts of family fun activities, food vendors line the streets, and local merchants keep their doors open later than usual.
One of the shops in out town was hosting a group of eight Tibetan Buddhist monks. These guys were all ordained by the Dalai Lama himself and typically live together with about 2,000 brothers in their monastery near the Himalayan Mountains.
These eight monks didn’t go rogue or want to find some good deals on holiday gifts… they’re on a mission to accomplish three goals and they came all the way to the US to do it:
- To spread their message of peace and harmony across all cultures, countries, and religions.
- To bring awareness of their struggle to Free Tibet from the tyranny and human rights violations of communist China.
- To raise funds to support their cause to provide basic needs to the monks back in the monastery.
In order to achieve their goals, the monks are visiting cities across the US during their 10-month tour where they spend their days praying, selling small trinkets for fund raising, and creating beautiful sand art known as a mandala. As you can see a mandala is a beautiful piece of circular artwork that is designed for a purpose. The purpose of the mandala created in my town was to promote world peace. Each of the sections of the mandala have a special meaning all related to their purpose. The grains of colored sand are laid down using a precise tool that allows them to create fine lines and words.
Here’s what I found most interesting: after the monks create the mandala, working on this particular piece for eight hours per day for three days in a row, they then destroy the art and return the sand to the earth where it came from.
Wow. All that work literally washed away in the river.
As the monks shared their message, I started thinking about their level of commitment to their message. Think about what they are doing to spread their message and ask yourself if you would do the same. They:
- Left the safety and familiarity of their home and their country to travel to the other side of the globe.
- Are going to be gone from home, friends, and country for a total of 10 months.
- Had to learn a new and vastly different language in order to communicate effectively.
Here they are, delivering their own Signature Speech — the leader being interpreted by a fellow monk who learned a bit more English, and they are committed to getting their message out to the world.
When you are passionate about your message and committed to having as many people know about you and what you do as possible, public speaking is THE WAY to make sure you are heard.
Lucky for you, you don’t have to travel half way around the world in order to find those who need to hear your message. You can do it in your own and local towns by creating your unique Signature Speech. Well first, let me say — ouch.
I have been in serious dental pain for the past 3 weeks. I’ll save you the long story, but let it suffice to say that I had work done, and as that progressed the doctors determined I needed more. Which turned out to be a root canal.
So yesterday I learned the meaning of the phrase, “About as fun as a root canal.”
It means it sucks.
But seriously… with as bad a reputation as a “root canal” has, modern dentistry has come a long way and the procedure was virtually painless. Aside from the injection of the anesthetic, I didn’t feel any pain at all. I was scared as all get out, but apparently the term “root canal” is scarier than the actual event itself.
So that was my yesterday morning.
I spent most of the afternoon recovering and resting. Then in the early evening I checked my email.
There was a message with the subject line “Hi from Cosmo.” (!!!!)
Of course I opened THAT one right away. Apparently Cosmopolitan Magazine wants my expertise to help them with a story they are developing and they plan to credit me fully. The message was brief and to the point. Can I have some information to them by Monday morning?
Begin happy dance of gratitude!
So what do a root canal & Cosmopolitan Magazine have in common? That was my day yesterday. (And boy did it turn out WAAAAAY better than I could have ever imagined!)
How did an editor at Cosmo decide to send ME a request for my expertise? It’s effective communication through online marketing. Because I have been writing for years now about effective communication and communication skills and have many articles, mentions, and links online, it was easy for this editor to find me. Also, by the way the editor asked for the specific information she did, I can tell she saw one of my online articles at Ezine Articles.com. I have to thank my article marketing mentor, Jeff Herring for teaching me what I know about article marketing!
Make it easy for the people looking for you to find you online and you’ll get cool emails and media requests, too! How do you do that? Be clear on your message and make sure your online image is professional, consistent, and cohesive because all that equals credibility.

And that got me to thinking. About this guy:
Yep, that’s right. The one and only Wile E. Coyote.
His antics in trying to catch the Road Runner truly never ended. He tried Acme product after Acme product hoping to reach his ONE goal: catching that darn Road Runner.
But, to the amusement of the audience, he never could catch up with the Road Runner.
Then I got to thinking about how watching Wile E. Coyote can lead to some useful success tips for Internet marketers. The past 3 years I’ve spent learning and implementing the many skills that make folks who do business online successful. And as a result I’ve coached many of my clients to success on the Internet using effective communication skills, public speaking, and my solid business and life coaching/consulting hybrid mix. And to me, true success is helping the people I work with succeed themselves.
If Mr. Wile E Coyote was MY client, here’s what I would suggest to him:
- Don’t put all your effort toward achieving just ONE goal. Have multiple goals by creating various streams of income — er– I mean — food sources(?). Then your world isn’t feast or famine.
- Evaluate spending your time and money with Acme. They may be the biggest brand on the block, but what results do you have to show for investing your money with them? And what support do they give you to help you once you own their products? Mr. Coyote, I dare say a company that allows you to explode in the air, fall flat on your face, go poof at the bottom of a canyon and more doesn’t care about your success– only if you make the next purchase from them.
- Maybe before you put the newest Acme tool or gadget to work, you could test it to make sure you won’t explode in the air, fall flat on your face, or go poof at the bottom of a canyon.
Then I’d tell my client, Mr. Coyote this: you are doing one thing right that many people don’t do. You keep on going, keep on trying, and never never ever give up. Perseverance is truly one of the secrets to success.

I spent yesterday with my Dad and sister in an annual holiday tradition we’ve been doing every year since I was 4 years old and she was 3. My Dad takes us to lunch and we go shopping for my Mom. Yesterday marked 34 years running!

For those of you who have been following the bouncing ball of my business over the past couple of years (has it been that long?), today I reached the next milestone: 800 subscribers to my business owners list! Wooo-hooo!
I began building this list in earnest one year ago this month. Then over the summer I picked up steam when I revamped my website to reflect the new business-related focus of what I offer.
To some 800 is a big number of subscribers– that would be to anyone who has less than 800 *smile.* To others 800 is sub-tiny– one Internet marketer I was recently reading said he has a “tiny” subscriber list of 8,000 (oh to be so tiny!).
For me that number represents people. 800 people have asked to know more about what I do and how I can help them better develop their communication skills to get more business, more clients and more cash flow. It’s exciting to know that people from 23 countries around the world are interested in my products and services to help them get the results they want. Exciting!
And by the way– most “experts” say you need a list of at least 1000 before you can really start to make money on the Internet. To that I say, “HA!
