Not only is June a great month for me personally with my birthday kicking off the month, but it’s fabulous professionally because it’s also Effective Communications Month! This year marks my 6th annual celebration of communication in business done in a way that honors the humanness of people involved in the communication, marketing, and speaking processes.
I think you’re gonna love what I have planned! I’m hosting a Grammy winner, a former opera songstress, and a best-selling author who’s books have been translated into 21 languages. No we won’t be talking about the music business, but how to effectively get YOUR message out to the world to attract more (and better!) customers and how to communicate with the customers and audiences you have.

Business people everywhere are taught that we need an “elevator speech” just as much as we need a business card, a website, and air to breathe in order to be successful.
But the crazy part is NO ONE likes to give those canned elevator speeches and NO ONE likes to hear them because they’re usually full of blah, blah, blah meaningless marketing drivel and feel so contrived and just yucky. I need a shower just thinking about it!
More importantly, evidence proves even the most well-crafted and best-delivered elevator speeches don’t work to bring in new business.

At this point, when someone says telesummit, a lot of people in the marketing world say “yawn.” Several years ago when the technique was new, telesummits were a cool innovation to help the organizer build his or her community of subscribers while at the same time provide great value with an excellent line-up of experts all in one virtual place.
Unfortunately, an innovative idea took off like wildfire and sometimes there were weeks with multiple telesummits all happening at once, often with many of the same overlapping experts. They all seemed to run together with the same old rehashed info and the same old rehashed marketing. B-O-R-I-N-G.
But here’s the thing— telesummits can still be effective because often the content is free and the experts really are providing top-notch, helpful information. But the key is to find a way to stand out from the rest and do them just a little bit differently. That’s what Stephen Beck is doing right now while marketing his List Building Super Heroes interview series, November 15-23, 2010.
What Steve has done right:
- He’s chosen a specific, popular topic: list-building. Business owners always need new ideas on how to build their lists (what I call community of subscribers).
- He’s chosen experts from people he knows personally who he is confident will deliver useful content top his audience.
- He’s marketing it in a fun way– I mean, look — he turned each of his speakers into cartoon super heroes! How cute is that??

I spent yesterday with my Dad and sister in an annual holiday tradition we’ve been doing every year since I was 4 years old and she was 3. My Dad takes us to lunch and we go shopping for my Mom. Yesterday marked 34 years running!
Today, however, I’m taking a break from the shopping (are you done yet?), the baking, and the gift wrapping to be interviewed by one of the
BEST teachers I have ever met.
